  • Shut the Box set made from Rubberwood
  • Includes two dice and rules
  • A quick to learn traditional game
  • Any number of players can play as you can take turns
  • Good fun for the whole family to enjoy

A nicely made and inexpensive Shut the Box game with two dice.

Made from Rubberwood, the board is robustly constructed and features a soft-feel, padded, felted area for rolling the dice. The padding softens the noise of the dice as they are rolled.

There are nine pivoting wooden tiles, each numbered individually on both sides. At the start of the game the tiles are tilted upwards and are then closed (or shut) as you roll the dice and combine the numbers rolled to eliminate (or shut) the required numbers. The combined number of both dice must be used exactly - but it is the player's choice as to which combination is flipped over. Therefore, the game is not purely down to luck, as some strategic thought is often beneficial.

Rules are also included.

Approx. Dimensions:

275 x 195 x 34mm
10.8x7.7x1.3 inch

Contains small parts. Unsuitable for children younger than 4 years old.

  • A large and beautifully made game for large groups and connoisseurs
  • 12 x 35 x 26cm
  • An old gambling game for as many players as you like
  • Great fun for children and adults alike

Also known as Canoga or "Batten down the Hatches", this is the old gambling game for as many players as you like. Players throw the dice and choose to shut either the numbers thrown or the sum of the numbers thrown. Each player tries to close all the numbers and thus shut the box!

Now this is a brilliant version of the game that is ideal for pubs or public events.

The game is much larger than the typical games found in toy shops and is designed in an "Olde Worlde" style. In fact it is more of a chest than a box with a chain to hold the lid and a metal handle and clasp at the front. The numbers are chunky wooden panels with a decorative shield painted on the back of each and enclosed are rules and two, extra-large wooden dice.

This product was formerly known as Old Century Shut the Box.

This product won a "Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award", a prestigious award from the totally independent consumer review group.

Dimensions are 12 x 35 x 26cm (5 x 10.5 x 14 inches - that's really big!)

Contains small parts. Unsuitable for children younger than 4 years old.

Also called by a bewildering variety of alternative names such as "close the doors", it isn't known where this old game originated. Most theories point to a source in Northern France; some specify Normandy and the Channel Islands as the specific location and claim that it has been played there for at least two hundred years. There is only evidence for it within England from the middle of the twentieth century, it having reputedly been brought to the South of England from the Channel Islands in 1958 by a Mr. 'Chalky' Towbridge.. The game is apparently also popular in Zambia!

An old pub gambling favourite, Shut the Box uses two dice and a special wooden playing tray. In the most common version, the tray features the numbers 1 - 9 in a row, each of which has a hinged cover and a turn involves repeatedly throwing the dice and shutting or covering a number or pair of numbers each throw. The turn ends when no numbers can be covered upon the throw of the dice at which point the player's total is calculated. The ultimate aim is to completely cover all numbers or "shut the box" which results in the best possible score of zero.
