A popular game in China, particularly among children, Dou Shou Qi is a fun Chess variant played with animal pieces. Each animal is graded in terms of power and pieces may only capture those of an equal or lesser value (with the odd exception). The objective is to maneuver one of your animals into your opponent's den.
The game is simple to understand but does require some strategic thought. It is therefore a great game for children and the animal pieces certainly enhance its appeal.
